Though we celebrate Christ’s resurrection every Sunday, the Easter season is a special time to rejoice over the new life we have in Jesus Christ. Download an Easter dinner prayer and activity for Catholic children that highlight the signs of new life that we experience during Easter and our new life in Jesus Christ. This resource can be used on Easter Sunday or before meals shared during the Easter season.
The Easter season coincides with the start of the season of spring. During the Easter season, signs of new life can be found in our parish churches, but also in our homes and communities. Children will enjoy searching for signs of new life in their own neighborhoods as both springtime and the Easter season begin. Together, discuss the spring signs of new life that we associate with the Easter season in your particular region or climate.
Some of the signs of new life that fill our churches during Easter include fragrant flowers, like those early blooms that spring up in backyards and parks. Bells ring during the celebration of Mass, and we sing “Alleluia,” which we have not said during the season of Lent. Outside, birds begin to call their spring songs. Many animals and insects return.
As the Easter season begins, challenge children to be “Easter Observers.” Ask them to use all of their senses to observe, experience, and record as many signs of new life as possible as the Easter season begins—both within their parishes and without. Encourage them to listen for the ringing of bells, the singing of “Alleluia,” the sounds of birds, animals, and insects. They can see and smell the flowers that we use to decorate our parishes, homes, and gardens. They may find the gold and white colors of the priest’s Easter vestments in their churches and outdoors. Baby animals may appear in the places the children visit. After giving children some time to be “Easter Observers,” invite them to come to class with a list of the signs of new life they have spotted. Compare notes, and see how many signs of new life your religious education class has seen together!
Of course, one of the special ways we celebrate Easter is by sharing a meal with loved ones. This printable Easter Dinner Prayer Card can be decorated by the children in your religious education program and used on Easter Sunday or before meals shared during the Easter season.
