Author Interview: Laurie Halse Anderson

Seminal. Touchstone. Bellwether. These are just a few of the words that come to mind when I think of Laurie Halse Anderson; she is in my mind, the quintessential young adult author of our time.

Laurie-Hasle-Anderson

So you can imagine my trepidation when I finally manage to talk with her.  I expected her to act like she knew just how amazingly popular her books are at my school and how my teacher friends and I speak her name with reverence.  No.  Instead, she acted like a lovely friend, chatting amiably while I tried not to overwhelm her with my giddiness.

I’m still quaking over how insanely down-to-earth Laurie is; her positive outlook and insightful ideas during her interview reflect the themes of her books – she shows with beauty and depth how characters can gain strength through weathering obstacles.

My favorite quote from Laurie:

"Words are the sounds made by the human heart that can be heard by the ear."

I cannot thank Laurie enough for our vocabulary interview, and I can’t wait to show it to my students!  Let me know what your students thought or who some of their favorite authors are…chances are, I may have interviewed them, and I will work on preparing a final video for you (and all the other Vocab Gal subscribers) next!
