This vocabulary activity works for all ages, because who doesn't love to color? At the mention of coloring my sophomores light up like kindergarteners at snack time. The trick is, students have to label their pictures with vocabulary words while they embellish their images.
Step 1: Select whatever coloring book picture(s) best illustrates your season and/or mood. Then, distribute coloring pages and colored pencils/markers/crayons to students.
Step 2: Assign a time limit of 10–15 minutes.
Step 3: Instruct students to label their pictures with an appropriate amount of vocabulary words that correspond with what's being portrayed on the coloring page. As they label their coloring pages with vocabulary words, kids will color in the corresponding shape/objects. Give them examples to help get started.
Example: I told my students that for the snowman’s top hat they should write “stately” on it because it makes the snowman look suave. The boy’s hands they could label them “adroit” and/or “deft” because he is skillfully shaping that snowman. That sun –perhaps label it “insidious” and/or “duplicitous” for shining down and making that snowman quite soon an “amorphous” blob.
Step 4: Award a prize to the student with the most vocabulary words accurately labeled on his or her picture. Have students share aloud a few of their labels!
Step 5: Display pictures on the wall for daily vocabulary review.
