So often, students feel a disconnect between their personal lives and their school lives, and I want to help find opportunities to connect the two. I have compiled a group of vocabulary practice worksheets that promote using social media in the classroom and are designed to help make learning vocabulary relevant to students!
The first social media vocabulary activity involves students creating their own Pinterest Boards. Students complete this vocabulary practice worksheet by drawing or cutting out images of things that will help them remember their vocabulary words. Their visual representations will help them make deep connections that they can call upon when asked to remember each vocabulary word's definition, and using a Pinterest-style worksheet helps them see how their personal life activities can be linked to learning vocabulary. The second social media-inspired vocabulary practice worksheet is Vocabularize Celebrity Tweets. With this activity students will help celebrities ditch the acronyms and made-up words. First, students will choose two celebrities or professional athletes that have a Twitter account. Then students will select two tweets that need to be vocabularized. Each edited tweet should contain at least two vocabulary words. All tweets should be appropriate for the classroom!
The final social media vocabulary practice worksheet will put vocabulary words and coding skills to the test! With the Create An App With Words activity students are charged with creating an app that either does whatever they want or create an app that help students review vocabulary words. Once students have designed their app, they will write a description using at least five vocabulary words. All apps must be appropriate for school and cannot contain any form of bullying or prejudice.
