The purpose of writing instruction is to help students become competent, confident writers in both school and work settings – and also throughout life. There are many challenges teachers face when designing lesson appropriate to classroom demographics. To effectively design the most appropriate lessons, teachers must familiarize themselves with state and local standards. Fortunately, the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) articulates the challenge.
I have outlined five strategies that teachers can use to help students become better writers and meet the expectations of the CCSS. The strategies include not only the teaching of writing but also understanding audience, vocabulary, and grammar.
