Pronouns and Subject Pronouns Activity, Grades 3–5

Planning is one of my favorite parts of teaching. When I start I know I have limitless options to help students become successful writers. One decision I have to make is what activities to use. The better that I know my students, the more appropriate tasks I can assign. Another decision I make daily is how I need to explicitly teach a skill.

Current research shows that explicit grammar instruction, especially for younger students, helps students write well and understand choices in regard to grammar, usage, and mechanics.

Grammar-Exercises

This week’s Common Core State Standard is L.3.1 that states:

Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

a. Explain the function of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in general and their function in particular sentences.

Grammar instruction must be placed within the framework of a students’ own writing. Teachers should gather writing samples from students then introduce and explain the function of parts of speech.
