Setting Learning and Vocabulary Expectations in the Classroom

I am always really excited about learning and teaching vocabulary words, but my students aren’t always as exhilarated as I am. After seeing a poster in my mentee’s classroom that listed both student and teacher learning expectations, I thought I should make my own version.

Posters Clarify Vocabulary Learning

I love the way this vocabulary-learning poster clarifies my expectations for my students, and makes explicit what my students can expect of me. I have tried to be straightforward in my language, while also reiterating that I am always learning — along with my students!

Posters Clarify Learning Expectation

I also created a poster including the basics of classroom learning that I hope covers all aspects of classroom teaching, learning, and behavior.

These posters set a positive tone for my classroom; I have often read about the importance of developing strong relationships with students in order to encourage learning, and these posters can “speak” volumes without me having to “say” anything (because we teachers know that students often stop listening soon after we start speaking).

I love posters, and I hope you do too. These two posters are not only beautiful, but they’re also functional. Drawing students’ attention to them occasionally can hopefully help clarify what great vocabulary learning looks like in action.

If you have other suggestions or ideas, I want to hear them!
