Recharge and Refresh: 5 Ways Teachers Can Stay Motivated

July is the month that marks the middle of summer for many teachers. Last month school had just ended and next month school will begin again. Before you think about heading to school to set-up your classroom – the floors are still being waxed and the carpets cleaned – continue to consider ways to refresh yourself and recharge before fall semester begins.

There are many tips to care for yourself this summer. ways-teachers-can-stay-motivated.jpgHere are some easy tips to integrate into your daily schedule (if you haven’t already done it):

  • Get outside. If you live in an area like I do – with snow for nearly nine months of the year – then the sunshine and warm weather is welcome. Plant a garden. Go for a daily walk. Hike on your favorite trails or someplace new. Ride your bike everywhere. Play with your kids at the park. Float on a river.. Teachers are inside for so many hours of the day, enjoy the warm weather and outdoor activities.

  • This doesn’t neccessily mean preparing for a marathon. Since we have more time, take up a new sport. Start that exercise routine you’ve always wanted.

  • Keep your brain working. Read a book from your favorite author. Read a professional book. Complete a daily crossword puzzle. Do a word search. Finish a Sudoku puzzle. Put a jigsaw puzzle together. Keep the blood flowing in your mind.

Don’t forget to take the time to add to your professional expertise this summer. Here are some quick tips to consider for next year:

  • Add technology to your lesson plans. Start small by adding a weekly blog, create a class social media account, or utilize a class hashtag.

  • Professional reading. Get inspiring ideas, gain motivation, or take time to plan around an innovative idea. Find some professional books and extend your teaching expertise. What I like the best about professional reading is I can read what is the most relevant to me, plan with it in mind, and implement in the fall. The reading can be quick, meaningful, and purposeful.

In order to most effectively care for our students next year, we must first care for ourselves. Enjoy your summer as you prepare mentally and physically for next year.
