With Valentine's Day approaching you may be looking for fun activities to incorporate into your literacy block. In this article, you'll find a free printable Valentine's activity that will get elementary students writing. Inspired by the Disney ® movie Frozen, I've created the Love Is An Open Door Writing Activity.
The Disney ® movie Frozen is a favorite of kids of all ages. If you have young children like I do, you have seen the movie and listened to all the songs many, many times. This bulletin board idea is inspired by the Frozen song, 'Love Is An Open Door'. Students will write about a person they love to visit or spend time with, and draw a picture of this person to be displayed with their writing piece.
Play the song, 'Love Is An Open Door' for students. Ask students to share what they think the song means. Focus students' attention on the phrase "love is an open door". Together as a class, explore what that phrase can mean.
Give each student a copy of my printable Love Is An Open Door Writing Template.
Ask your students, "Who do you love to spend time with?" "Whose door do you feel is always open to you?"
Invite your students to write a description of this person and why they love to spend time with them.
Note to teacher: This writing activity can be as simple or as complicated as you would like depending on your grade level and your students' ability. The students' writing can be as simple as a sentence or it can be a lengthy writing piece. For example, a student keeping it simple might write: I love to spend time with my grandma because she listens to my problems and helps me solve them, or I love visiting my aunt because I laugh at all her hilarious stories.
After students finish their writing piece, give them each a Heart and Door Template. Have the students decorate the heart and then draw a picture of the person they described in their writing to go behind the door.
Display the students' hearts and writing pieces on a bulletin board labeled Love Is an Open Door. (You may also want to decorate the edges of the bulletin board with a few characters from the movie Frozen.)
