Literary Devices in Poetry Activity, Grades 3–5

I love meeting new people and making new friends. Interactive activities are a great way to get to know others and have some fun while doing it! There is so much to learn about our students at the beginning of every school year. We want to learn about them personally (see my letter writing activity in a previous post!), and we need to learn about them academically.

Literary devices in poetry are commonly studied and assessed in school. The matching activity provided here is a great way to see what your students know and allow your students to have some fun at the same time!

To begin the literary devices in poetry activity, please print the Literary Devices in Poetry matching template, cards and definitions. Students will do the following:

  • Cut out each card
  • Match the poetic device with the correct definition
  • Glue the card with its definition on the template
  • Write a sample sentence correctly using the poetic device

The literary devices in poetry that students need to know varies by grade level. The following words are featured in the download:

  • Personification
  • Simile
  • Metaphor
  • Figurative language
  • Onomatopoeia
  • Alliteration
  • Imagery

Download the Literary Devices in Poetry worksheets to see what your students know! If you know your students might struggle with some of the terms, simply pull the card and its definition out of the card stack. You can use them later to introduce the term! There is also an answer sheet to download to support you in this activity.
